Cerritos : City to Fund After-School Play for Junior High Youths

Share

The Cerritos City Council has approved an agreement with the ABC Unified School District to operate an afternoon recreation program for junior high school students.

Council members took action after learning that the school district could no longer provide such after-school activities because of budget cutbacks. In the past, about 20% of junior high students have been involved in after-school recreation, officials said.

The program, which includes sports, crafts and special events, will cost the city $34,800. The activities began informally about a month ago before being ratified by the council’s action. Any junior high students from Whitney High School or Tetzlaff, Carmenita or Haskell junior high schools are eligible to participate. About 20 students at each school are taking part so far.
