SAN CLEMENTE : Assailants Slash Store Clerk, Set Fire
- Share via
Police are looking for two men who walked into a grocery early Wednesday morning, slashed a clerk’s back and tried to torch the store before departing, apparently empty-handed.
The clerk, Fares Khalil Sunnah, 32, of San Clemente, was treated for a large cut on his back and released from Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo, Police Sgt. James R. Thomas said.
Sunnah was the only employee working in Sam’s Rancho Market in the 2700 block of Via Cascadita, Thomas said, when the assailants walked in shortly after 7:30 a.m. They walked up, grabbed Sunnah and slashed his back.
They then tried to set the store’s office afire before fleeing, but sprinklers quickly doused the small blaze.
Police are baffled over a motive for the attack, because no money appears to have been taken.
