The National Institutes of Health has awarded $1 million to San Diego State University to encourage minority students to study biomedical sciences, officials said Friday.

As part of the grant, minority students will be paired with researchers and will be paid a stipend for travel, research and supplies.

The program is open only to students who major in biology, psychology, chemistry, communicative disorders, public health, or biomedical-related research. To qualify, the students must have a grade point average of at least 2.8. Only seven undergraduates and seven graduates will be selected.

Those chosen for the program, called the Minority Biomedical Research Support, will be assigned to work in the laboratory of an investigator whose research is in line with the student’s interests.
