Brazil Gets $200 Million to Preserve Rain Forest

BRASILIA —
Germany has given Brazil $200 million to help it preserve the Amazon rain forest and support projects for the poor.
Earlier this week, Brazil President Fernando Collor de Mello demanded that the Group of Seven industrialized nations--Germany, Japan, the United States, Canada, France, Italy and Britain--provide promised support for a $1.25-billion plan to protect the Amazon jungle.
Brazilian researchers estimate that in 1990 about 8% of the rain forest was lost to development and burning.
