Jeff Maggert had an eagle and six birdies on his way to a second consecutive seven-under-par 65 and took a four-shot lead after two rounds of the $800,000 Independent Insurance Agent Open Friday.

Maggert’s round over his home course gave him a 36-hole tournament record of 14-under-par 130 and a comfortable lead over Duffy Waldorf and Billy Ray Brown.

Waldorf and Brown each shot 67s for the second day in a row. Mike Reid and John Wilson each had 68s and were at 135.

Three-time tournament champion Curtis Strange and Ben Crenshaw were among those who missed the cut.

Steve Jones and Robert Wrenn, who started the day tied for the lead, fell off the pace. Jones had a 74 and Wrenn barely made the cut after a 77.

Maggert, whose first-round 65 was played over two days because of weather delays, started his second round on the back nine with four birdies on the first six holes.

A par-saving putt on No. 17 kept his momentum rolling and a 4-iron to the green preceded an 18-foot eagle putt on par-five, 515-yard No. 1. Maggert three-putted from 20 feet on No. 2 for bogey but added birdies on Nos. 5 and 9.

Maggert’s tee shot on No. 17 rolled into a water hazard and, after taking a drop, his approach shot stopped eight feet from the hole and he sank it for par.
