El Monte : Pioneer Day Parade Nov. 9

The city will celebrate its annual Pioneer Day Parade on Nov. 9, with the first units stepping off at 11 a.m., the City Council decided Tuesday.
The parade’s theme, “Christmas at the end of the Santa Fe Trail,” is in memory of the late Richard Lopez, a longtime El Monte resident who was active in planning past parades and had suggested the title.
San Diego Padres pitcher Richard Rodriguez, a graduate of Mountain View High School in El Monte, will be grand marshal. Council members were pleased with Rodriguez’s selection, citing his work with local children during more than 30 voluntary presentations on the dangers of drugs and gangs.
The council appropriated $2,000 to fly in Rodriguez from his home in Tennessee. The funds will come from the Police Department’s narcotics forfeiture account, money obtained as the result of police participation in drug-related arrests.
