Army Tightens Control on Dubrovnik
The Yugoslav federal army bombarded remaining Croatian strongholds in eastern Croatia on Saturday and strengthened its control over the Adriatic port of Dubrovnik, where war-weary residents looked for escape routes.
The army opened fire on a ferry boat bringing relief supplies to Dubrovnik and a crew member was injured, Croatian Radio said.
The army, which has blockaded Dubrovnik for more than three weeks, agreed to a truce Friday with Croatian forces defending the historic town. About 5,000 people have asked to be evacuated and are expected to leave today.
The Yugoslav army commander, Col. Gen. Pavle Strugar, said that if Croatian forces lay down their arms, the army would not enter the city, would end its blockade and would restore electricity and water. He said he expected an answer by this evening.
