California’s Russell White, slowed by walking pneumonia the past three weeks, ran for 166 yards and scored four touchdowns Saturday as the 10th-ranked Bears defeated San Jose State, 41-20.

“I probably haven’t felt this good since last year,” White said. “It felt good to be able to do some of the things I used to be able to do.”

White, who carried 32 times, scored twice in the fourth quarter, the first time on an 80-yard run with 10:58 left.

White said he became so fatigued at the end that “I hoped someone would tackle me.”

Less than four minutes later, after a fumble recovery by Cal safety David Wilson at the San Jose State 28, White ran 14 yards for a score to put Cal on top, 34-13.

“I don’t think he’s 100% yet, but he sure is getting better,” said Steve Mariucci, Cal’s offensive coordinator. “Hopefully, he’ll get stronger and stronger as the season goes on.”

Cal, 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the Pac-10, has its best record since the 1950 team won its first nine.

In the first half, White caught two touchdown passes from Mike Pawlawski, who ran two yards for a touchdown with 20 seconds left.

It was White’s first 100-yard game since gaining 121 against UCLA on Oct. 5. He played sparingly against Oregon, gaining only 37, and was held to 55 last week by Washington.

White was gasping and short of breath at halftime last week, but Saturday was a different story.

“He’s fought a hell of a fight all season,” Coach Bruce Snyder said.

San Jose State (4-3) had five turnovers.
