South African Fulton Allem made up seven strokes Sunday with a back nine that featured five birdies and emerged with a one-stroke victory over Tom Kite, Billy Ray Brown and Mike Hulbert in the $800,000 event at the Tournament Players Course at The Woodlands, Tex.

Allem had a final-round six-under-par 66 and finished the 72 holes at 15-under 273.

Despite the hot round, Allem still needed stumbles by Brown (71) and tour rookie Jeff Maggert (80), who was the leader after each of the first three rounds. Allem also needed to hold off a charge by Kite (68), who missed a 10-foot putt on the final hole that could have sent the tournament to a playoff.

Brown lost a three-shot lead on the backside and his 20-footer to tie Allem on the final hole just slid past.

Hulbert, who started the day three shots back, never could get anything going, making 14 consecutive pars before a bogey and two birdies led to a 71. A long bid for birdie on No. 18 and a playoff with Allem fell short.

Australian Rodger Davis fought off a strong bid by England’s Nick Faldo and won the Volvo Masters at Sotogrande, Spain, by one shot.

Faldo closed with a three-under-par 68, the low round of the day over the windy and demanding Valderrama Golf Club, but came up short when Davis held on with a par 71 for his first European victory of the season in the Tour’s final event.

Davis finished with a 280 total, four-under-par. Germany’s Bernhard Langer, the co-third round leader with Davis, was in contention until bogeying the 15th and 17th holes. He at 283.

Seve Ballesteros and Steven Richardson closed with 70s and tied for fourth with Mark James (73) at 284.
