Orange County Board of Education member Judith A. Michaels has resigned to take a job in Sacramento, county education officials announced this week. Board members will select a replacement at a special meeting at 8:30 a.m. Monday. .

Michaels represented District 1, which includes the Santa Ana and Garden Grove Unified school districts, two of the most populous and diverse districts in the county. Michaels, who was first elected to the five-member board in 1986, has been appointed legislative director of the California Federation of Teachers.

“It’s a challenging position with many different kinds of students in the area,” Michaels said of her position on the Board of Education. “The biggest challenge on the board would be the budget and the diminishing resources we have as educators.”

The board has to appoint a replacement by Monday or call a special election in April, which would cost $90,000. The board prefers to appoint someone to avoid the extra costs, said County Supt. of Schools John F. Dean.

Francis X. Hoffman, who represents District 3, said only a handful of candidates have applied and that the board is still accepting applications.

The appointed term will extend to June 1, when the seat becomes open for election.
