Joe McNaull, a 6-foot-10 sophomore forward-center on the San Diego State basketball team, was arrested on campus Friday on petty theft charges, according to Tom Boyer, a detective with the SDSU Department of Public Safety.

Boyer said McNaull, 19, walked out of the food section of the Courtyard Cafe with some Twinkies, potato chips and donuts without paying a bill totaling $2.07. McNaull had apparently purchased other items minutes before.

After walking out of the Cafe, McNaull was detained by Aztec Shops security agents and escorted to a security office, where he was issued a misdemeanor citation.

Jim Brandenburg, SDSU basketball coach, said Tuesday the matter is being handled internally by university administration.

“(McNaull) is extremely remorseful,” Brandenburg said. “He has made restitution.”

McNaull played in 29 games for last season, averaging 4.7 points and 3.9 rebounds.

Boyer said a court appearance date has been set for Dec. 7. The Aztecs are scheduled to play in a tournament at the University of Texas on that day.
