An Oxnard man faces a maximum sentence of 21 years in prison after pleading guilty last week to charges that he shot and killed his estranged wife in the presence of the couple’s son, then 12, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County district attorney’s office said Wednesday.

John A. Ramirez, 56, pleaded guilty Friday to a count of voluntary manslaughter in connection with the March slaying in the living room of the victim’s apartment in Colton, Deputy Dist. Atty. Margaret A. Powers said.

Ramirez also pleaded guilty in San Bernardino County Superior Court to charges of child endangerment, burglary, assault with a firearm and illegal use of a firearm, Powers said. He will be sentenced Nov. 25 and is expected to get the maximum sentence, she said.

Mary Espinosa Ramirez, 42, died March 5 after being shot three times with a handgun by Ramirez, the prosecutor said. The two had apparently been arguing over their relationship when Ramirez fired the gun.
