Expect Sunny, Mild Weekend

While most of the nation reels from harsh winter storms, San Diego can expect picture-perfect November weather this weekend, officials said.

“The Chamber of Commerce will be proud” of this weekend’s weather, said Wilbur Shigehara, chief forecaster for the National Weather Service in San Diego.

A favorable high-pressure system has brought the pleasant winter weather, Shigehara said. The system is strong enough to repel any incoming foul weather but will not have the strength to deliver knockout warm temperatures. The result, according to the National Weather Service, will be mild, sunny days and clear, chilly nights.

This weekend the downtown, coastal area can expect high temperatures from 68 to 75 degrees. Lows in the coastal strip will be in the 35-to -45 degree range, Shigehara said.

Most of the county will have clear skies all weekend, with only a hint of low clouds in the morning, Shigehara said.

Highs at the beaches will be in the upper 60s, Shigehara said. Swimmers and surfers should take their wet suits to the beach this weekend. Shigehara said the water temperature should be about 63, a few degrees below normal.

There will be nearly freezing lows in the mountain areas this weekend, the weather service said. Shigehara believes that low temperatures in the mountains will be 25 to 34 degrees. Highs will be 48 to 58 in the mountains, he said.

The desert temperatures, which have been a few degrees below normal, should rebound this weekend. Desert highs this weekend could reach 80, with lows near 40, Shigehara said.

The National Weather Service believes the high pressure system that developed over the eastern Pacific Ocean will remain in San Diego throughout next week.

Besides providing pleasant weather for outdoor activities, the clear skies and mild temperatures will help reduce smog, Shigehara said. The inversion layer, which traps smog close to the ground, stays relatively high when temperatures cool, Shigehara said.
