Sonora Wins Its First League Game Since 1989

Robert Knowles threw two touchdown passes to lead Sonora to a 19-11 victory over Fullerton Friday night at Fullerton District Stadium. It was Sonora’s first Freeway League victory since 1989.

Knowles, who completed 13 of 22 passes for 121 yards, scored on a two-yard run and passed for touchdowns in the second and fourth quarters.

After Fullerton took a 3-0 lead on David Chacon’s 36-yard field goal, the Raiders (3-5, 1-2 in league) drove 70 yards in 17 plays, capped by Knowles’ touchdown run with nine seconds remaining in the first quarter.

After Knowles hit Curtis Lucero for a 10-yard touchdown pass with 2 minutes 3 seconds remaining in the second quarter, Fullerton (1-6-1, 0-3) scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak by Keith Ginter and a two-point conversion run by David Chacon to cut the lead to 13-11 with 4:17 remaining in the third quarter.

Knowles completed an eight-yard touchdown pass to Todd Fletcher with 1:59 left in the game for the Raiders’ final score.
