More than 4,000 volunteers joined in Saturday to clean up trash and paint over graffiti in the second phase of Operation Sparkle, a city-sponsored community cleanup effort in the San Fernando Valley, officials said.

Los Angeles Police Sgt. Dennis Zine said Saturday’s cleanup appeared to be more successful than the first Operation Sparkle in June. “That time, we collected 185 tons of trash, and we’re sure we did better than that this time,” he said.
