One of the largest synagogues in Ventura County has received approval to build a 27-classroom building.

The Thousand Oaks Planning Commission on Monday unanimously approved the $3.5-million project for Temple Etz Chaim, said Ralph Weiss, the temple’s development director.

Representatives of United Methodist Church, which is next door to the temple on Janss Road, supported the project, Weiss said.

The temple’s congregation uses classrooms at the church for religious education. The two congregations will continue to share some parking, Weiss said.

Temple Etz Chaim, a conservative synagogue, was founded by about 50 families more than 20 years ago, Weiss said. The congregation has grown to about 700 families, he said.
