Reward: Donald Trump has invited a truck driver to dinner to thank him for nabbing the teen-ager charged with robbing the developer’s mother. Trump said in New York he would thank Lawrence Herbert “on a personal basis for the job he did. . . . He’s a helluva nice guy.” Herbert was driving last week in Queens, N.Y., when he saw a youth mug 79-year-old Mary Trump. Herbert followed the attacker and grabbed him.

* Go Figure: An evening gown at a car race? Cameo Antoinette Diggs, Miss Black Colorado, thought that would look silly, so she wore a suit instead. But pageant officials dethroned her for that and for missing two public engagements. Diggs says she was sick at the time of the engagements, and that officials shortchanged her on scholarship money. She was replaced by second runner-up Lynn Marie Kelley when the first runner-up, Pam Bailey, couldn’t be reached. Bailey has since turned up.

* Only a Brief Widowhood: Bao Bao, Germany’s only male panda, will soon be off on a two-year honeymoon in England. Zoo people are sending him there to mate with Ming Ming at a zoo in Bedfordshire. The first baby will belong to Berlin.

* The Real Lottery: An Irish couple hoping for official U.S. residency through a State Department visa lottery has won the Massachusetts Megabucks $3.5 million jackpot. “I was so broke last week,” said Elizabeth Murphy. Although the two will be allowed to keep their winnings even if deported, Conor Murphy worries about the citizenship sweepstakes: “We probably have a better chance of winning Megabucks again.”
