Twins, Braves Find Success, Save Money
The World Series champion Minnesota Twins were 15th among the 26 major league teams in payrolls during 1991, and the National League champion Atlanta Braves were 19th.
The Oakland Athletics, who slumped to fourth place in the American League West after three pennant-winning seasons, led the majors with a $39.2-million payroll. The Boston Red Sox were second at $36.6 million, and the Dodgers third at $35.6 million.
Minnesota’s payroll rose from $14.2 million in 1990 to $23.6 million this season. The Twins had the 20th-highest payroll in 1990.
Atlanta, 19th in 1990 at $14.2 million, had its payroll rise to $21.7 million.
