A fire at a hotel on San Diego Bay injured six people late Thursday, the San Diego Fire Department said.

Four guests at the Seapoint Hotel suffered minor injuries, including heat exposure and smoke inhalation, a spokesman for the department said.

A firefighter and a San Diego police officer also suffered minor injuries. The six were treated at nearby hospitals and released.

The fire began shortly before midnight on the second floor of the five-story hotel in the 4800 block of North Harbor Drive. Fire investigators said the cause was an “electrical malfunction.”

The officer, James Morrison, suffered heat exposure when he climbed onto a second-story balcony and tried to rescue residents who were momentarily trapped, the spokesman said.

The Fire Department has estimated damage at $400,000, but a hotel spokesman said Friday that damage was not that extensive. He put the cost of repairs to the hotel’s smoke- and water-damaged interior at about $50,000.
