Marty Smith, a three-time motocross national champion from San Diego, was part of a three-man team that finished first and won the SCORE Baja 1,000 off-road race in Ensenada, Mexico. Smith, with Larry Roeseler of Mission Viejo and Ted Hunnicutt Jr. of Moorpark, covered 754.1 miles across the Mexican peninsula in 13 hours, 37 minutes and 25 seconds. It was the fourth Baja 1,000 victory in a row for Roeseler, third for Hunnicutt and first for Smith. Motorcycles started three hours ahead of four-wheel vehicles.
MEN’S TENNIS
Ignacio Martinez of the University of San Diego lost to Laslo Markovits of UC Santa Barbara, 7-6, 7-6, in the third round of the Rolex-ITCA Southern California Championship at UC Irvine. Martinez was the only one of four Toreros to make it out of the second round earlier in the day.
USD’s Kevin Bradley and Phil Hoffman and San Diego State’s Mike Paradowski and Eric Tebbs were eliminated in the third round of the doubles draw.
MEN’S SOCCER
Cal State Los Angeles scored a 3-0 nonconference victory over USD, dropping the Toreros to 6-12-0. USD has gone scoreless for 313 consecutive minutes. CSULA is 6-9-0.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Gracie Schutt had 15 kills and 16 digs, but San Diego State fell to Brigham Young, 15-9, 9-15, 15-4, 15-7, in a Western Athletic Conference match in Provo, Utah. Laura Warnock and Suzanne Egbert paced BYU (22-2, 7-1) with 18 kills apiece. SDSU, which plays at Utah tonight, fell to 13-12, 4-3.
The San Diego-based USA national team defeated Brazil, 17-15, 8-15, 15-11, 7-15, 15-9, late Thursday in the first round of the World Cup tournament in Japan. Caren Kemner and Elaina Oden led USA with 23 and 20 kills. USA plays Kenya today.
