Iowa’s Jim Hartlieb succeeded where his more famous brother, Chuck, had failed by directing the Hawkeyes to a victory over Indiana.

Hartlieb, making his first start, threw two touchdown passes and Mike Saunders tied a school record with four touchdowns as 10th-ranked Iowa knocked off No. 25 Indiana, 38-21, Saturday at Iowa City.

With the victory, the Hawkeyes took over sole possession of second place in the Big Ten.

Hartlieb, a junior, started in place of all-Big Ten quarterback Matt Rodgers, who injured his left knee in a 16-9 victory at Ohio State a week earlier.

The last time Iowa played Indiana, Chuck Hartlieb was quarterback. Chuck had a career day against the Hoosiers, completing 44 of 60 passes for 558 yards, but Iowa lost, 45-34.

On Saturday, Jim Hartlieb’s numbers were modest--11 of 18 for 170 yards. However, of the 11 completions, two went for touchdowns and six went for first downs.

The Hawkeyes, 8-1 overall and 5-1 in the Big Ten, moved closer to a Dec. 30 Holiday Bowl bid. Indiana fell to 5-3-1 and 4-2.

The Iowa defense, ranked No. 1 in the Big Ten, intercepted Indiana quarterback Trent Green’s first three passes and helped the Hawkeyes to a 21-0 first-quarter lead.

No. 19 Ohio State 35, Minnesota 6--Running back Carlos Snow, who suffered a concussion in the previous game and wasn’t sure he could play, came on to spark the Buckeyes to an easy Big Ten victory at Minneapolis.

Ohio State led just 7-3 with 7:20 left in the second quarter when Snow made his first appearance in the backfield, and then ran nine times for 71 yards before halftime and finished with 95 yards in 13 carries.

“I practiced all day Wednesday, and by the end of practice I was dizzy and nauseous and nobody knew if I could play or not,” said Snow, who was knocked out in the second quarter of the Buckeyes’ 16-9 loss to Iowa.

Ohio State’s defense, ranked 12th nationally, did its part as the Buckeyes (7-2, 4-2) held an opponent under 20 points for the ninth game in a row. They’ve allowed 12.9 points a game and only six touchdowns in six Big Ten games.

The Gophers fell to 2-7 and 1-5, and the announced crowd of 30,145 was the smallest to see the Gophers in the nine years they have played at the Metrodome.

Illinois 41, Purdue 14--Jason Verduzco completed his first seven passes and threw for 189 yards and two touchdowns in the first half as the Illini won a Big Ten game at West Lafayette, Ind.

Verduzco, who completed 16 of 20 passes in the first half, threw to 10 different receivers. Verduzco was 20 of 25 for 255 yards overall.

Representatives from the Peach, Liberty, Freedom, Independence and Aloha bowls were on hand as Illinois (6-3, 4-2) dominated Purdue (3-6, 2-4), taking a 41-point lead en route to its first road victory this season.
