Scary Things Come in All Sizes, Shapes

In response to Kathleen Doheny’s article, “What Scares Us?” (Oct. 31), my third-grade class has also just completed a random sampling of “scary things.”

They surveyed 32 adults, including parents, teachers and school office visitors. They found out that most of the adults were most afraid of something bad happening to their family, car accidents, reptiles or the current economy.

The children also did a survey of their own most scary things and found that the most common fears were things related to being in the dark, such as monsters in the closet or under the bed.

The most surprising results, they decided, were that some adults were frightened of animals (snakes, lizards), but no children were. They were also surprised to see that five children had mentioned fire as a fear but no adults had.

When one adult responded to the survey with “nothing,” the children decided that you shouldn’t be afraid to admit to being scared because everybody is of something.
