A 22-year-old Seabee is in critical condition after falling about 100 feet from the lower part of Rose Valley Falls while hiking on Sunday in the Los Padres National Forest, authorities said.

Marc Endsley, a utilities man with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 5 at the Port Hueneme naval base, was hiking with some friends when he slipped and fell, said Ventura County Sheriff’s Lt. Paul Anderson.

Endsley was conscious but disoriented when deputies picked him up and airlifted him to Ventura County Medical Center about 2 p.m., Anderson said. He had head cuts, bruises and back pain.

Rose Valley Falls, located in the Los Padres National Forest about 15 to 20 miles northeast of Ojai, is a notorious site for hiking accidents, Anderson said.

Hikers “can’t resist climbing them. They overestimate their abilities, and they slip . . . It’s a fairly steep area,” Anderson said.
