3 Killed, 1 Injured in Plane Crash in Monterey County
A light plane crashed in rugged terrain in a remote canyon Sunday, killing three of the four people aboard, authorities said.
The surviving passenger sustained multiple injuries and was at Salinas Memorial Hospital, said nursing supervisor Ann Robinson. The survivor’s condition was not available.
Will Rullman, a contractor who witnessed the crash, said the pilot turned the craft in an apparent attempt to gain altitude, but the plane stalled and crashed into the side of a 2,200-foot hill.
Helicopters ferried the victims from the crash site, said Monterey County Sheriff’s Lt. Robert Baehr. One victim was dead at the scene, and two others were pronounced dead at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, said John DiCarlo of the Monterey County coroner’s office.
The origin and destination of the aircraft were not available.
