3M Photodyne Products in Camarillo will close its plant by June 30, and 50 employees will be laid off or transferred, a company official said Monday.

Some of the employees may be moved to the division’s headquarters in Austin, Tex., said Donald Campbell, Photodyne products manager. The jobs are mainly in manufacturing or research and development.

3M Photodyne will be closed gradually, with posts being eliminated starting in April, Campbell said. Company officials will help the employees who aren’t transferred find other jobs at 3M plants in California or at other area firms, he said.

The plant, at 3760 Calle Tecate, produces fiber-optic test equipment. Acquired in 1988 by 3M, the operation is part of the 3M Telecom Resources division. 3M’s corporate headquarters are in St. Paul, Minn.

Most of the employees to be laid off will receive severance and early retirement pay.

The 3M Magnetic Media Division manufacturing plant on South Lewis Road in Camarillo, which employs about 850 people, will not be affected, Campbell said.
