A fire engulfed a City of Industry gun manufacturing plant on Monday, setting off ammunition and forcing firefighters to battle the blaze from outside the building, authorities said.
The fire at the Raven Arms plant at 1300 Bixby Drive was reported at 3:27 p.m., a Los Angeles County Fire Department dispatcher said. Firefighters could see the heavy black smoke from the fire as they left their stations, dispatch supervisor Charlotte Kramer said. The building was fully engulfed by flames when firefighters arrived.
About 16 companies responded to the fire, but intense heat and exploding rounds of ammunition kept firefighters outside the building, Kramer said. The fire was controlled by 4:25 p.m. and no other buildings were damaged, she said. The cause had not been determined.
