Transients Told to Leave Shelters Under Overpass

Three dozen transients have been ordered to leave their makeshift living quarters beneath Hollywood Boulevard where it crosses over the Hollywood Freeway, police said Tuesday.

Police were sent to the scene Monday evening in response to an anonymous phone tip that one of the transients was going to be killed following a dispute, said Sgt. Gordon Campbell of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Hollywood Division.

Because the 36 transients, most of them adults, were illegally trespassing on state property, they were ordered out, he said.

Residents in the area have long complained that transients living beneath the overpass make too much noise and cause property damage, but there are no plans under way to permanently evict them or fence in the area, according to Campbell and Russell Snyder, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation, which owns the property.
