City officials plan to apply for about $354,000 in 1992-93 federal Community Development Block Grant funds to reinforce buildings on Main Street and to help build a senior citizens center.

The block grant application will go to the City Council for final approval in early December.

The county Housing and Community Development office will allocate whatever funds it receives among individual applicants next spring.

City officials hope to be awarded funds for several large projects, among them a $50,000 project to seismically reinforce buildings on Main Street, a $154,000 plan to make roadway repairs on Main Street, and $10,000 for projects at the Orangewood Children’s Home. They also are seeking $100,000 for a senior citizen’s center that will be part of a new community center for which construction should begin early next year.

Block grant funds are given for projects that upgrade low- to moderate- income areas of a city.
