Monterey Park : Fireworks Permits Cut Back

Share

As an alternative to banning fireworks, the city has reduced the number of fireworks permits allowed each year.

Tuesday, the City Council voted 4 to 1, with Councilman Sam Kiang opposed, to allow only 18 fireworks stands in the city, down from a previous maximum of 25. Clubs and community groups set up stands around July 4 to raise money.

If more than 18 clubs apply for permits in a year, clubs that have sold fireworks in the past will be given priority.

Although the action does not limit the number of fireworks sold, it will make it easier to enforce state laws that ban certain kinds of fireworks, city officials said. But Kiang said the new limit is unfair because it doesn’t reduce fireworks sales and because it discriminates against clubs that haven’t sold fireworks in the past.
