Carson Will Lay Off 7 Workers

Share

Financially ailing Carson has sent layoff notices to seven full-time temporary workers, the first in a series of attempts to offset a projected $2-million revenue shortfall by the end of fiscal 1991-92.

The layoffs, effective Jan. 1, are expected to save $100,000 and leave the city with about 275 full-time employees, said City Administrator Larry Olson. An unknown number of part-time workers also face layoffs, city officials said.

In July, the council adopted a $29.1-million spending plan that called for eliminating nine city jobs and ending subsidies for a number of Parks and Recreation Department programs.

Revenues for the first three months of this fiscal year, which started in July, are $500,000 less than during the same period a year ago. By the end of the fiscal year, sales tax revenues--which account for half the city’s income--are expected to total $13 million, about $1 million short of projections.
