Times Announces Layoffs, Pay Cuts: The Los Angeles Times said it will lay off or cut the pay of 260 part-time mail room workers as part of a restructuring in which other full-time employees will be transferred into the department. The cutbacks are aimed at improving operating efficiency and reducing costs, The Times said. Under the plan, 149 part-time mail room workers will be laid off, while 111 will see their pay fall from up to $18 an hour to $8 an hour. As a result of the staff reductions, 82 new full-time jobs will be created in the mail room and filled by custodial workers, whose positions are being eliminated. Times spokeswoman Laura Morgan said the mail room changes were “a tough decision” but were “necessary to put part-time pay rates at a competitive level.” The Times said the mail room cutbacks should result in annual savings of $1 million.
