DARK HORSE? A national search to replace UC President David Gardner will naturally include chancellors of all nine UC campuses. . . . Among those, insiders say, leading candidates could be UCLA Chancellor Charles E. Young and former UC Irvine executive vice chancellor Chang-Lin Tien, who left in 1990 and now heads UC Berkeley. One drawback for Tien: not enough experience. But Jenny Doh, UCI’s first student regent, says: “Tien was the first person I thought of.” She hopes that the regents look for someone with his “insight and sensitivity to diversity.”
