Tens of thousands of Romanians besieged gasoline pumps in a last-ditch bid to fill up before prices quadrupled Friday following a major reform of the currency.

Across Romania, vehicles stretched for many miles during an icy and foggy night. The lines wound through side streets, and it was at least an eight-hour wait to reach the gasoline stations.

The price of premium gas rose Friday morning to $2.40 a gallon from 60 cents.
