John Kenneth Galbraith’s “Recession Without End” (Opinion, Nov. 3) and his prescription for recovery can be boiled down into the simple words from the well known song:

“Tax the rich, feed the poor,

“Till there are no rich no more.”

It’s been tried before. It was called communism. It didn’t work. The recession is cruel, and we need to do everything in our power to alleviate the suffering it causes. But we mustn’t allow our compassion to overcome our common sense.
