COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC Irvine Drops Into Tie for First After Loss to Pacific

Eighth-ranked University of the Pacific defeated second-ranked UC Irvine, 10-6, in a Big West Conference water polo match Sunday in Stockton, dropping the Anteaters into a tie for first place with Pepperdine.

Pacific (10-9, 5-4 in Big West) led, 4-0, at halftime and held on for its second victory over Irvine since 1966. The Tigers beat the Anteaters for the first time in school history last season in Stockton.

Todd Hosmer scored six goals for Pacific. Pablo Yrizar had three goals for Irvine (19-7, 7-2), which finishes the regular season Saturday at UC Santa Barbara.

In the Rolex-ITCA Southern California women’s tennis championships:

Richards Wins--Laura Richards of the University of San Diego defeated USC’s Petra Schmitt, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, to win the singles title at UC Irvine. Susan Hawke and Nicole Storto of San Diego State beat UCLA’s Mamie Ceniza and Paige Yarushuk, 6-1, 7-6, for the doubles title.
