Dave Chambers, whose Nordiques are 3-14-1, was fired by Quebec on Sunday.

Complicating matters for Chambers this season was the absence of key players.

Foremost among them was Eric Lindros, the junior-level sensation selected No. 1 in the entry draft in June. Lindros has rejected all contract offers to join Quebec.

Valeri Kamensky, a forward who was expected to help offensively, suffered a broken leg in August and won’t play until at least late December.

Curtis Leschyshyn, regarded as a potential leader on defense, is recovering from torn knee ligaments suffered last season and will not return for at least another month.

The Nordiques are in last place in the Adams Division. Their record is the worst in the Wales Conference and their seven points matches the success of the San Jose Sharks, an expansion team.

Pierre Page, the Nordiques general manager, made the announcement shortly before a team practice and said he would take over the coach’s job.

Page, who will retain his general manager’s post, had previous coaching experience with the Minnesota North Stars from 1988-90.
