County Park Named for Magic Johnson

Hailing Earvin (Magic) Johnson as a “national hero,” the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday unanimously approved renaming the Willowbrook Recreation Area in honor of the retired Los Angeles Lakers star.

Supervisor Kenneth Hahn, who proposed the change, praised Johnson as a “hero in the field of basketball” and “a great role model” for young people.

Johnson announced on Nov. 7 that he was retiring from the Lakers after testing positive for the virus that causes AIDS. “His honesty, courage and candor in announcing that he has tested HIV positive and his decision to become a spokesperson for AIDS prevention and awareness are an added testament to his remarkable character,” Hahn said.
