An attempted robbery at a Carson gas station erupted into a shootout with an off-duty Los Angeles police officer that killed a 17-year-old suspected gang member, authorities said Tuesday.

Larry Glover Jr. of Carson was pronounced dead of a chest wound at 11:22 p.m. Monday at Long Beach Memorial Hospital, officials said.

The officer, Theodore Hammond, 36, suffered bullet wounds in his left thumb, groin and cheek after a gunfight with Glover and two other youths who allegedly tried to rob Hammond and his wife at the gas station shortly after 10 p.m., said Deputy Rafael Estrada, of the sheriff’s Information Bureau.
