City to Publish List of Prostitutes’ Patrons

Share

The Long Beach City Council has voted to try to cut down on prostitution by humiliating the men who patronize hookers.

The council voted 6 to 3 to publish a list of men convicted of soliciting sex from prostitutes. The Police Department is to compile the list and buy advertising space in the Long Beach Press-Telegram. Police must present the council with a plan for compiling the list and a fee system to comply with the vote.

The names of convicted offenders already are public, but the current system makes it difficult to amass a list through court records, Assistant City Atty. Robert Shannon said. Press-Telegram Publisher Peter Ridder said that the newspaper would accept advertisements of convicted solicitors.
