A 64-year-old woman was struck and killed by a tow truck Sunday evening while walking her dog in a crosswalk.

Shortly after the accident, police said, the pet beagle returned home to the woman’s startled husband, who later found his wife fatally injured in the intersection of Amaganset Way and Yorba Linda Boulevard.

Police identified the victim as Paquita Said of Tustin. Sgt. Michael Pettifer said she died at the scene of the accident. The driver was identified as Lee A. Shaver, 23, an employee of John’s Towing in Santa Ana. No charges have been filed in the case and an investigation was continuing late Sunday.

Police said the truck was headed south on Yorba Linda Boulevard when Said was struck in the crosswalk at Amaganset Way. The southbound lanes of Yorba Linda Boulevard were closed to traffic while investigators searched for clues to the accident.

According to neighbors, Said walked her dog about the same time every night.

“We know the lady because she would walk around our cul de sac with the dog,” said Joseph Esposito, who lives about a block from the scene. “It was a beagle--a nice little dog.”

Other neighbors complained that the poorly lighted area has become a throughway for nearby freeway traffic.

“It looks like this is getting to be a speedway on Yorba Linda, going north and south,” said Edward Todd, another neighbor.
