VENTURA : Seminar Puts Parks Personnel to Test

Share

Three teams of supervisors from the city of Ventura’s Parks and Recreation Department tested their creativity in a leadership seminar recently by making rafts from 13 sections of plastic pipe, a length of cord and four wooden planks.

No set of instructions came with the material, forcing the 20 participants to work in teams to design and construct the rafts. The exercise was part of a professional development seminar conducted by the Wilderness Institute.

The completed rafts illustrated three different solutions to the problem of building a stable raft, said Stephen L. Hartmann of the Parks and Recreation Department.

No one was dunked during a short sea trial of the rafts, Hartmann said.
