One man died and another was wounded as the result of a gunfight outside a National City motel early Sunday, police said.

Lt. Carey Sullivan said police were summoned just after 1:30 a.m. when shots were fired in the parking lot of the Value Inn in the 600 block of Roosevelt Avenue.

On arrival, officers found two wounded men. Both were motel guests. They learned that a suspect and his companions had fled. Four people were later apprehended and were being held for questioning.
