Top-seeded Anders Jarryd of Sweden and John Fitzgerald of Australia beat Americans Ken Flach and Robert Seguso, 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, Sunday to win the ATP Tour World Doubles Finals championship.

“They’ve proven why they’re No. 1 in the world this year,” said Flach, who will team with Seguso for the United States this weekend in the Davis Cup finals.

Flach and Seguso were seeded third in the $1 million tournament, which featured the world’s eight top-ranked doubles teams.

Second-seeded David Pate and Scott Davis lost all three of their round-robin matches.

The winners received $325,000, including a $100,000 bonus for being ranked No. 1. The runners-up got $205,000.

Police arrested 36 protesters who gathered outside the stadium Sunday chanting anti-apartheid slogans and singing songs.

The Assn. of Tennis Professionals, which runs the men’s tour, has scheduled tournaments in South Africa, but this was the first major ATP event here since 1987.
