The Seattle Seahawks defeated the Denver Broncos Sunday despite an ignominious performance by Seahawk quarterback Dave Krieg.

Krieg lost two fumbles to gain a share of the NFL’s all-time lead in that category and also had two passes intercepted, but the Seahawk defense kept John Elway and Gaston Green under control for a 13-10 victory.

“We were fortunate the running game was there, because the passing game sure wasn’t,” said Krieg, who completed nine of 19 passes for 70 yards. “I only lost two fumbles? I thought it was at least three or four.”

The loss dropped the Broncos (8-4) out of sole possession of first place in the AFC West. The Raiders (8-4) have the edge over the Broncos in the No. 1 tiebreaker for the division title because they have beaten Denver twice.

Krieg’s two fumbles gave him a share of the NFL career fumble record of 106 set by Dan Fouts of the San Diego Chargers from 1973-1987. Krieg started the day in third place behind Roman Gabriel’s 105 career fumbles.

The Seahawks (6-6) kept alive their chances for an AFC wild card by stopping Elway and Green when it counted.

“We’d like to win the rest,” Krieg said. “If the passing game is as productive as our defense, we’ll be in good shape.”

Elway completed 13 of 23 passes for 132 yards and ran for 29 yards in six carries.

But he had two passes intercepted and also lost a fumble.

“We worked all week on knocking the ball loose, and you saw it paid off right away,” Seahawk linebacker Rufus Porter said, referring to a fumble by Elway in the first quarter that led to a field goal.

The Seahawks stopped Denver on downs at the Seattle 33 with 4:39 left and again at the Seahawk 42 with 1:51 remaining.

The Broncos got the ball on the Seattle 45 after Michael Brooks intercepted a pass intended for fullback John L. Williams and returned it nine yards with 2:50 left.

A fourth-and-seven pass from Elway to Michael Young was ruled incomplete on Denver’s last offensive play of the game.

Green had 49 yards in 19 carries.

Williams gained 109 yards in 17 carries for the Seahawks.

In the third quarter, Denver cut Seattle’s lead to 13-10 with a touchdown and a field goal by David Treadwell.

Rookie linebacker Mike Croel of the Broncos got his 10th sack of the season and caused Krieg to fumble. The fumble bounced to Bronco defensive end Warren Powers at the Seattle 22 and he ran into the end zone for a touchdown with 52 seconds gone in the third quarter.

The Seahawks led, 13-0, at halftime on field goals of 36 and 42 yards by John Kasay and a four-yard touchdown pass from Krieg to Jeff Chadwick.
