No End to Festivities During Holiday Season

‘Tis the season for music, lights, food, parades and more. From the traditional to the unique, there will be a plenitude of holiday events offered in the coming weeks by city parks and recreation departments, chambers of commerce and community groups.

Below is a guide to some of the Christmas and Hanukkah sights and sounds of North County.

For Kids

Dance: (Dec. 6, 7-10 p.m., Harding Auditorium, 3096 Harding St., Carlsbad): A winter king and queen will be crowned at this holiday dance for junior high school-age students. Tickets are $4 in advance and $5 at the door. More than 300 youths attended last year’s dance. Call 434-2833.

Snow: (Dec. 7, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Lomas Santa Fe Plaza): Santa Claus arrives with 10 tons of snow to play in.

Crafts: (Dec. 14, 9-11:30 a.m., Glen Park Scout House, 2149 Orinda Drive, Cardiff): Kids ages 5-7 can make holiday door wreaths and “shake and snow” scenes. Cost is $15. Call 944-3380.

Santa Breakfast: (Dec. 14, 9 a.m., La Colonia Park, 715 Valley Ave., Solana Beach): The city’s parks and recreation department is sponsoring a children’s breakfast with Santa. Cost is $3 per adult and $2 for children. For reservations, call 793-2564.

Holiday Stories: (Dec. 15, noon-1 p.m., Inn L’Auberge Del Mar, 1540 Camino Del Mar): Professional storytellers will entertain children with holiday tales in the lobby. Storytelling will be repeated from 1-3:30 p.m. Dec. 22. Admission is free.

Breakfast With Santa: (Dec. 21., 9-11 a.m., Escondido Elks Lodge, 315 W. Washington Ave., Escondido): The City of Escondido Parks and Recreation Department, the Elks Lodge and the Escondido Soroptomists are co-sponsoring this breakfast for children aged 10 and under and their parents. Tickets are $2 per person and can be purchased at the Parks and Recreation Department, 201 N. Broadway.

Winter Wonderland Camp: (December, Glen Park Scout House, 2149 Orinda Drive, Cardiff): A holiday day camp for kids ages 5-12 featuring field trips, music, crafts and games with a holiday theme. Cost is $60 a week for kids who participate from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., and $70 a week for kids who participate in extended care from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Call 944-3380.

Little Elves Camp: (Dec. 23-Jan. 3, The Barn, 149 E. San Marcos Blvd., San Marcos): A holiday day camp for kids ages 6-12 featuring Christmas crafts and a field trip to the zoo is being sponsored by the San Marcos Community Services Department. Cost is $9.50 a day. Call 744-1050.

Holiday Cooking Workshop: (Dec. 23, 2-4 p.m., La Colonia Park Community Center, 715 Valley Ave., Solana Beach): Elementary-age children are invited to do some baking, make some candy and construct a gingerbread house, among other craft activities. Kids get to eat everything they make. Cost is $2 per child. Call 793-2564.

Letters to Santa: (Through Christmas, Silver Bells Christmas Store, 204 E. Vista Way, Vista): Children of all ages can mail their letters to Santa Claus at the store’s U.S. Mail Box earmarked just for North Pole-bound missives. Hours for dropping off Santa’s mail are 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. The store stays open until 9 p.m. Thursday.

New Year’s Eve Disneyland: (Dec. 31-Jan. 1, 6 p.m.-3:30 a.m., Poway Teen Council): An overnight Disneyland trip for teens ages 13-18 is being sponsored by the Poway Teen Council. The bus leaves Community Park, 13094 Bownron Road, Poway, at 6 p.m. Dec. 31 and returns about 3:30 a.m. Jan. 1. Cost is $40 for residents and $60 for non-residents. Call 748-1892.

Parades

Oceanside Parade: (Dec. 7, 10 a.m., Hill Street at Wisconsin, Oceanside): A float competition and an officially sanctioned high school band competition and an appearance by Santa Claus make up this children’s Christmas parade. Parade-goers are asked to bring a wrapped toy to donate to the Toys for Tots program. Drop boxes will be available in front of the Oceanside Civic Center.

Escondido Jaycees: (Dec. 14, 9 a.m., Escondido High School down Broadway to Grape Day Park): About 200 entries are expected for the 45th annual Christmas parade sponsored by the Jaycees. Food and a celebration will follow the parade in the park.

Vista Chamber: (Dec. 14., 6-8 p.m., Vista): More than 70 entries will be featured in the 36th annual Vista holiday parade sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. The parade follows Pala Vista Drive to Santa Fe to Vista Way to Escondido Boulevard.

Boat Parade of Lights: (Dec. 14, 7 p.m., Oceanside Harbor): More than 40 boats are expected for the 15th annual event sponsored by the Oceanside Yacht Club.

Sights

Christmas Display: (Dec. 1-Jan. 1, dusk to midnight, 1256 San Vicente Road, Ramona): This is the ninth year Hardin and Betty Hanson have decorated their home with more than 15,000 lights. Santa will appear nightly from 5-9:30 p.m. Dec. 15-24 and distribute free candy canes to the kids.

Santa’s Wonderland: (Dec. 7-31, 5-10 p.m., John and Velma Myers’ home, 920 E. 5th Ave., Escondido): More than 3,000 lights are used to light up the 63-foot cedar tree and surrounding area in the Myers’ front yard. Also featured are Santa and his sleigh with nine hand-crafted reindeer, snow, a carousel filled with dolls, a Santa’s workshop, the Old Woman’s Shoe, electric trains and animated characters. John and Velma will preside over their wonderland for the 26th year as Mr. and Mrs. Claus. The public is invited to view the display and sign the guest book.

Nativity Scene: (Dec. 7-Jan. 1, 5-10 p.m., Tony and Betty Carvalho’s home, 263 E. 9th Ave., Escondido): This is the 13th holiday season the Carvalhos have decorated their front yard with lights, large and small nativity scenes, animated bears, a large pine tree, snowmen and Santa on the roof. A playhouse is also decorated. Last year, about 7,000 visitors signed the Carvalho’s guest book.

Santa Claus Christmas: (Dec. 15-Jan. 1, 5-9 p.m., Dee and Danny Baker’s house, 1927 4th St., Julian): This display features three antique elves, a skating scene, a Nativity scene and lots of lights. A loud speaker projects holiday tunes. The lights will stay lit until midnight on Christmas Eve.

Festival of Lights: (Dec. 20-Jan. 5, except Dec. 24, 25, 31 and Jan. 1, 4-8 p.m., Wild Animal Park, 15500 San Pasqual Valley Road, Escondido): More than 100,000 lights will fill Nairobi Village during the park’s fourth annual Festival of Lights. Crafts, carolers, visits with Santa, puppet shows, snow play area, storytelling and live animal shows will also be featured. Reduced admission prices for the festival are $5.95 for adults, and $2.50 for children ages 3-15 and will be in effect between 4-8 p.m. each day. Hanukkah

Hanukkah Bazaar/Celebration: (Through Dec. 1, Congregation Beth Am, 525 Stevens Ave., Solana Beach): A bazaar featuring Hanukkah gifts and wrapping paper will be held daily during the congregation’s regular business hours through the first day of Hanukkah on Dec. 1. From 4:30 to 7 p.m. on Dec. 1, a celebration for the whole community will be held featuring dinner, music, clowns and games. Cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children. Reservations are required by Nov. 29 and can be made by calling 481-8454.

Latke Party: (Dec. 1, 5 p.m. SamSonS Restaurant and Deli, 8861 Villa La Jolla Drive, La Jolla): The second annual Potato Latke party on the first night of Hanukkah will go to St. Vincent de Paul as a holiday gift to the homeless. Latkes will be sold for $1 apiece. Entertainment, music and traditional dreidel games are planned for the children. Call 455-1461.

Hanukkah Party: (Dec. 7, 7:30 p.m., Ner Tamid Synagogue, 16981 Via Tazon, Rancho Bernardo): In addition to the candle-lighting ceremony, there will be bingo, a white elephant sale, a grab bag and a gift exchange. Latkes will be served. Sponsored by the synagogue’s sisterhood and men’s club, the party is free and for adults only. For reservations, call 695-6960 or 485-6350.

Celebration: (Dec. 8, 4-5:30 p.m., Temple Adat Shalom, 15905 Pomerado Road, Poway): A celebration for the congregation and the public, with games, candle lighting ceremony, music and more. Admission is free.

Yiddish Songs: (Dec. 10, 1-3 p.m., Temple Solel, 552 S. El Camino Real, Encinitas): Cantorial soloist Kathy Robbins will perform a Hanukkah program of Yiddish songs for the Society for the Preservation of Yiddish. Admission is $1. For reservations, call the Temple office at 436-0654.

Tree Lightings

La Costa: (Nov. 30, 6:30-7:30 p.m., La Costa Resort & Spa, Costa Del Mar Road, Carlsbad): A 30-foot Christmas tree atop the resort’s clubhouse will be ceremoniously switched on as the 60-piece Coastal Communities Concert Band plays seasonal music. Cookies and punch will be served, and characters from Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” will read from the holiday classic. The public is invited.

Carlsbad: (Dec. 8, 6 p.m., at the fountain on the corner of State and Grand Streets): The city of Carlsbad’s annual tree-lighting ceremony includes elementary school children placing hand-made ornaments on the tree, performances by the Carlsbad Community Band and junior high school band, and the tree lighting at 8 p.m. Santa Claus will make an appearance.

Del Mar: (Dec. 8, 2-5 p.m., Inn L’Auberge Del Mar, 1540 Camino Del Mar): The inn and the Chamber of Commerce co-sponsor the third annual Christmas celebration and lighting of the village tree. Santa and his sleigh, storytellers, musicians and mimes will be on hand in the afternoon followed by the tree-lighting ceremony shortly after dark.

San Marcos: (Dec. 14, 7 p.m., The Barn, 149 E. San Marcos Blvd.): The city’s annual tree-lighting ceremony features a homemade cookie exchange. Boxes with a variety of Christmas cookies will be sold for $6.

Solana Beach: (Dec. 13, 5:30-7:30 p.m., La Colonia Park, 715 Valley Ave.): The third annual holiday tree-lighting ceremony and family concert is sponsored by the city’s parks and recreation department.

Vista: (Dec. 14, 8:30 p.m., Wildwood Park at Lincoln Middle School, Vista): Hot chocolate and coffee will be available for sale during the annual lighting of the Christmas tree.

Sounds

Benefit Concert: (Nov. 30, 8 p.m., Poway Center for the Performing Arts, Espola and Titan Roads): Eddie Fisher performs a benefit concert for the Salvation Army. Tickets are $25. Call 748-0505.

Songs: (Dec. 5-24, 6-7 p.m., Inn L’Auberge Del Mar, 1540 Camino Del Mar): Choirs will perform traditional Christmas music in the inn’s lobby nightly. Admission is free.

Children’s Choir: (Dec. 6, 8 p.m., Solana Beach Presbyterian Church, 120 Stevens Ave.): The 100-voice San Diego Children’s Choir presents a holiday concert. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. Call 634-0429.

Holiday Extravaganza: (Dec. 6-8, 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday, Palomar College Theatre, 1140 W. Mission Road, San Marcos): The Palomar Community Orchestra will perform Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 1, and Christmas spirit abounds with North Pole Follies, a dance production choreographed by Tom Hansen, featuring the Palomar Dance Ensemble. Holiday Classics: (Dec. 8, 3 p.m., Carlsbad Community Cultural Arts Center, 3557 Monroe St.): MiraCosta College’s Pacific Coast Concert Band and the Festival Choir will perform holiday classics including “Sleigh Ride,” “White Christmas” “Festival of Carols” and “Christmas Music for Voice and Winds.” The band and the choir will perform the same concert at 3 p.m. Dec. 22 at the MiraCosta College Theatre, One Barnard Drive, Oceanside. Living Christmas Tree: (Dec. 14 and 15, 6 p.m., Fallbrook First Baptist Church, 125 W. Hawthorne, Fallbrook): The 50-member church choir, directed by Karen Raftrey, will present a variety of Christmas songs and several original numbers. Part of the Christmas story will be told in vignettes as the choir performs. The tree will be decorated with chains, garlands, velvet bows and all-white miniature lights. Donations will be accepted. Christmas Harmonies: (Dec. 15, 2:30 p.m., Del Dios Country Store, Escondido): A free concert sponsored by the North County Bluegrass and Folk Club features the Christmas harmonies of Monty and Kathleen.

Lessons and Carols: (Dec. 15, 5 p.m., Solana Beach Presbyterian Church, 120 Stevens Ave.): The church will hold a Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. Prior to the concert, at 4:30 p.m., harp and flute music will be performed. Admission is free.

Band Concert: (Dec. 15, 7 p.m., Oak Crest Junior High School, 675 Balour Drive, Encinitas): A free holiday concert will be presented by the 65-piece Coastal Community Concert Band.

Singing at the Inn: (Dec. 17, 6 p.m., The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe, 5951 Linea del Cielo, Rancho Santa Fe): Rancho Santa Fe School’s 550 students, grades kindergarten through eighth, will present an annual concert. The lighting of the Rancho Santa Fe village Christmas tree occurs at the event.

Carols: (Dec. 18, 7:30 p.m., MiraCosta College Theatre, One Barnard Drive, Oceanside): The 28-voice Spartan Chamber Chorale will perform traditional and contemporary holiday music. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors. Call 757-2121, ext. 435.

Caroling Hayrides: (Through December): Poway Stables has hayrides for holiday carolers seven days a week. The wagons can accommodate about 30 adults or 55 to 60 children. Call 788-1600.

Theater

A Christmas Carol: (Nov. 29-Dec. 22, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. Sundays, Pine Hills Lodge Dinner Theater, 2960 La Posada Way, Julian): An original musical version of Charles Dickens’ classic Christmas tale will be performed. Tickets for adults are $25 for dinner and the show and $20 for kids 12 and under. Sunday matinees are $12.25 for adults and $5 for children. For reservations, call 765-1100.

Season’s Greetings: (Dec. 5-8, 12-15, MiraCosta College Theatre, One Barnard Drive, Oceanside): Alan Ayckbourn’s play shows a chaotic slice of Christmas with Neville and Brenda as they celebrate and squabble with family and friends. Pet Pictures: (Nov. 30, Dec. 8, 14, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Escondido and Oceanside): All pets, from dogs and cats to pot-bellied pigs and boa constrictors, are invited to have their photos taken with Santa Claus. Polaroid photos of one pet with Santa costs $5. Each additional pet, child or adult in same photo is $2 per pet or person. All proceeds will benefit the North County Humane Society and SPCA. Santa will be available for photos at the Oceanside Petco, 2227 El Camino Real, on Nov. 30 and Dec. 14. Santa will be at the Escondido Petco, 645 N. Broadway, on Dec. 8.

Toys For Tots (Dec. 7, noon-3 p.m., Escondido Promenade, West Valley Parkway and Auto Parkway): Free photos with Santa will be given to all children who donate a toy for the annual Toys for Tots campaign. The Marine Color Guard will also perform at noon during the event, and other entertainment will be provided.

Santa Photos: (Nov. 30, noon-3 p.m., Mission Center, corner of El Camino Real and Mission Avenue, Oceanside): Kids can have their picture taken with Santa Claus for free. One Hour Quality Photo and the shopping center are sponsoring the event.

Gatherings

Holiday Fantasy: (Dec. 1, 7-11 p.m., Shadowridge Country Club, 1980 Gateway Drive, Vista): The third annual Moonlight Amphitheatre Holiday Fantasy fund-raiser features a silent auction, dinner, dancing and holiday revue by the Moonlight Players. Community Christmas: (Dec. 1, 8 p.m., La Costa Resort & Spa, Carlsbad): A holiday variety show featuring music, clowns and other performances. Tickets are $5 at the door or by calling 931-8709.

Castle Lighting: (Dec. 5, 7 p.m., Amy Strong Castle, base of Mt. Woodson, Ramona): With a flip of the switch, 13,000 white twinkle lights will illuminate the exterior of the historic castle built in 1921. Following the lighting ceremony, guests enter the castle for seasonal refreshments. The event is an annual fund-raiser for the Ramona Historical Society. Tickets are $25 and must be purchased in advance. Call Lynn Morgan at 481-8500.

Del Mar Holiday Faire (Dec. 6-8, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. each day, Del Mar Fairgrounds): The fifth annual Del Mar Holiday Faire sponsored by the 22nd District Agricultural Assn. will feature crafts, food, and decor competitions. The faire also features gift booths, entertainment, carnival rides for young children and a play area with more than 100 tons of man-made snow. Fair-goers can help construct a giant gingerbread house. Nearly 22,000 visitors attended last year’s event. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for those 62 and older, $1 for children ages 6-12, children younger than 6 get in free. Parking is free.

Christmas Tree Lane: (Dec. 6 and 7, Rancho Bernardo Inn, Bernardo Ballroom, 17750 Bernardo Oaks Drive, Rancho Bernardo): The 10th annual fund-raiser for the Boys and Girls Club of Escondido features five events. Two luncheon/fashion shows will be held at 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Dec. 6. Nordstrom provides the fashions for both shows and a viewing of 13 decorated Christmas trees is included. Tickets are $45 per person. A champagne supper party with dancing and a drawing for prizes begins at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 6. Cocktail attire is required. Tickets are $100 per person or $1,200 for a table of 10. On Saturday, Dec. 7 at 9:30 a.m., children and adults can have breakfast with Santa. The event starts with a viewing of the decorated trees and is followed by breakfast at 10:30 a.m. Tickets are $20 for kids under 13, $25 for adults, or $300 for a table of 12. At 5:30 p.m. Dec. 7, a black tie gala dinner dance will be held. A drawing will be held for the 13 decorated trees, one of which has attached a $1,000 cash gift. Holiday Village: (Dec. 7, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., downtown Carlsbad on Carlsbad Village Drive): The merchants of downtown Carlsbad will host a holiday open house with music, entertainment, strolling carolers, cookies and refreshments in every shop.

Homes Tour: (Dec. 7, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Bear Creek Country Club estates, Murrieta): Four homes will be featured on the Rancho-Temecula Area Woman’s Club Christmas Home Tour. A Christmas gift boutique will also be available. Tickets are $12.50. Call (714) 676-5698 or (714) 676-5164.

Homes Tour: (Dec. 8, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Vista): The Vista Community Clinic hosts its fifth annual holiday homes tour, featuring four homes in Vista that have been decorated by local florists and designers. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door. Refreshments will be sold at each home. The tour is self-guided, but free bus service will be available with preference given to seniors and handicapped. Proceeds from this year’s tour will benefit the Kare for Kids Fund. Christmas: (Dec. 22, 6 p.m., Grace Community Church, 1234 Barger Place at San Vicente, Ramona): The Puppet Gang performs “The Puppet Christmas Tree” for the whole family. Admission is free.
