1 Killed, 4 Hurt in Oceanside Crash
An early morning three-car accident on northbound Interstate 5 in Oceanside killed one driver and injured four other people Thursday, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The dead woman was identified as Nancy Jean Conway, 20, a Costa Mesa waitress, the CHP said.
The accident began about 3 a.m. when Conway’s car rear-ended a car driven by William Bray, 26, a sailor stationed in San Diego, authorities said.
Conway’s car veered to the left after the collision and struck the center divider of the freeway just north of the California 78 interchange, the CHP said. Conway’s car then bounced back into the freeway lanes, where a third car, also northbound, struck the stalled car broadside, killing her and injuring a passenger in her car, Keiko Matsumoto, 20, of Costa Mesa, the CHP said.
Steven Stocker, 47, of Escondido, driver of the third car, his 13-year-old son and his 15-year-old daughter were injured in the collision, authorities said. The Stockers and Matsumoto were taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, authorities said.
A Scripps nursing supervisor said Matsumoto was in the intensive care ward late Thursday. Stocker was reportedly treated at the Scripps emergency ward and released.
