RUNWAY TO REALITY : Pin Stripes and Plaid Are Suited to Each Other

Share

New York designer Isaac Mizrahi likes to see women wearing the pants. One of his looks for fall ’91 is a chalk-stripe jacket over matching pleated trousers.

He sells the suit pieces separately. The jacket is $790; pants, $495. Mizrahi showed them with a black leather vest, $595. And for a first layer he opted for an opaque black cotton-blend turtleneck and matching panty hose for $195.

The outfit is available at Neiman Marcus, Beverly Hills, and Bullock’s, Los Angeles, for a total of $2,075. The red plaid scarf and gray beret are not available in stores.

Men’s suits at budget prices are easy to find in the Los Angeles garment district. King Fashions on East 9th Street carries men’s gray pin-stripe suits similar to Mizrahi’s version for women for $149.

For alterations, the New York Tailor shop on Los Angeles Street, just around the corner, will make adjustments while you wait. Sleeves, cuffs and jacket tailoring cost about $25.

A patent leather vest with gold zippers similar to Mizrahi’s is by Van Buren and sells for $170 at Antenna of Hollywood. The black turtleneck in cotton is $7 at ClothesTime, L.A. stores. For $10, pick up a gray wool beret at the Maddest Hatter in the Beverly Center. And J. Crew catalogue offers a pair of red tartan scarves for $24 each. To order, call (800) 562-0258. Total cost of this outfit is $384.
