A 19-year-old Torrance man was in critical condition Friday after being shot several times during a struggle with two sheriff’s deputies in Santa Clarita, authorities said.

The man, whose name was not released, was shot after he attacked two deputies with a baton he had just wrestled away from one of them, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

He was treated at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital for gunshot wounds in the torso and leg, said sheriff’s spokesman Bill Linnemeyer.

The shooting occurred about 1 p.m. when deputies responded to a complaint about a man screaming and brandishing a knife in the 27000 block of Las Mananitas Drive near Arriba Drive, Linnemeyer said.

Deputies said the man was looking for his ex-girlfriend in a nearby home and then became violent. When deputies arrived, the man at first surrendered, but began resisting when a deputy tried to handcuff him, Linnemeyer said.

The man grabbed a baton from one deputy and began swinging it at both of them before he was shot, Linnemeyer said.

Deputies discovered two knives in his pockets, Linnemeyer said.
