The Great Ziegfeld (Showtime Monday at 10 a.m.) MGM pulled out all the stops for its glamorous 1936 film biography of the fabled showman (played by William Powell, far handsomer than the real Ziggie). Highlights are the famous telephone scene in which Oscar-winning Luise Rainer, as Anna Held, realizes she’s lost Ziegfeld forever, and the super-sumptuous “A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody” production number featuring Virginia Bruce.

Sweetie (Bravo Monday at 10 p.m.) You’ll probably either hate or love New Zealand filmmaker Jane Campion’s 1989 debut film, a dark comedy in which Campion makes a heroine out of an overweight, obstreperous, probably demented young woman (Genevieve Lemon) who makes life hell for her family; worth seeing as a warm-up for “An Angel at My Table,” Campion’s stunning, harrowing biography of major New Zealand writer-poet Janet Frame.

La Lectrice (Bravo Thursday at 6 p.m., again at 10:30 p.m.) Michel Deville’s subtle 1988 fable stars Miou-Miou as a reader for hire whose innocent-seeming profession leads her into playing teacher, parent, sex-therapist and even revolutionary.
