THOUSAND OAKS : Fire Kills Pet Dog, Burns Townhouses

Two townhouses caught on fire in Thousand Oaks on Sunday afternoon, but no one was injured, authorities said.

At 12:24 p.m. firefighters received a call about a fire in the 600 block of Kendale Lane, said Scott Quirarte, Ventura County Fire Department spokesman.

“When they got there, there were flames on all three stories of the townhouses,” Quirarte said. “There was no wind blowing to give us trouble, though.”

Firefighters brought the blaze under control in about 45 minutes, Quirarte said.

Authorities estimated damages at $280,000 for the structure, and $1.25 million for the homes’ contents. One of the owners collected antiques, authorities said.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, but it began in one of the townhouses and spread to an attached one, Quirarte said. The fire did not affect two other attached townhouses in the complex.

Although no people were hurt, the fire apparently killed a dog belonging to one of the owners.

“We lost the dachshund,” said Anneliese Snider, who discovered her townhouse on fire.

“I can’t imagine how it started,” she said. “We always unplug everything.”
